WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 20, 2012:     
Marjorie Ann Wood,  (March 28, 1920 - February 16, 2012) Age 91, of Minnetonka, passed away peacefully on February 16th at Methodist Hospital in St Louis Park MN. Marge was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 28th, 1920. Marge was preceded in death by her brother, Warren, his wife, Ruth and nephew, Bill Wood. Also preceeded in death by parents, Win and Anna Wood of Tonka Bay, Minnesota. Survived by nephews, Win (Karen), Jim (Shirley), John (Laura), (Bill's widow Asa); sister-in-law, Helen Stone of New York City; 12 grand nephews and nieces, Grant (Sarah), Brian (Crissy), Teri (Jon) Lamers, Paul (Stephanie), Justin, Kelly (Tim) Oar of Oregon, Jenna, Susanne, Chris, Dan, Emma and Sara and 11 great-grand nephews and nieces.

As a youngster, Marge grew up on Colfax Avenue in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School, class of 1938. She attended the University of Minnesota and the MacPhail School of Music. Summers were spent at the family cottage on Lake Minnetonka. As a young woman, Marge moved to New York City to follow her dreams of appearing on Broadway. She was in several Broadway productions including the road tour of The Sound of Music. Later in her career she entertained thousands on cruise ships in the Bahamas.

In 1973 Marge moved back to Minnesota and became a very active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Excelsior, MN. Marge was active in the music ministry, the adoration chapel, and volunteered working in the church office. Marge had the energy of someone half her age. She lived life as a spunky, and independent minded woman, who at 91 was still active in politics and driving her own car.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM Thursday February 23rd, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Excelsior, MN, 680 Mill St 55331. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service and luncheon for all guests will follow on premises. Burial will follow lunch at St. Mary's Cemetery, 4403 Chicago Ave So. Gloria B. Dotzenroth, age 86 of Excelsior passed away 2-17-2012. Preceded in death by her husband, Paul Norman Dotzenroth and parents, George and Blanda Landin. Survived by children, David (Jennifer) Dotzenroth, Lynne Dotzenroth, Ken (Laura) Dotzenroth; grandchildren, Max, Wiley, Heidi and Erik and many family and friends.

Gloria was a well educated woman who loved learning and teaching. She was a longtime resident of the Lake Minnetonka area and an original member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Navarre.

William E. "Bill" Seamans, age 92 of Tonka Bay, passed away the same way he lived, peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family. Bill was a devoted family man and a talented musician. Preceded in death by parents, Pearl and Ade Seamans; and brothers, John & Tom Seamans.

Survived by wife, Jean Seamans (Nee Ess); children, Steve (Lesley) Seamans, Kevin (Kim) Seamans, Mary Jo (Gary) Paulson, Pete (Kristi) Seamans, Therese (Tom) Zuppan, Don (Wendie) Seamans, and Lisa (Craig) Kraayenbrink; 16 grandchildren, 8.5 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and countless friends. Joan Catherine Butler, age 83, of Hopkins, formerly of Mpls and Belgrade, MN, joined the Lord on Feb. 13, 2012. Preceded in death by loving husband, Dick; parents, Agatha and Henry Schmitz; sister, Gerry Black; and great-grandson, Brandon Elness. Survived by children, Mary (Mike) Dubay, Kathy (Stu) Weiner, Linda (Bob Allen) DuChene, Debbie (Mitch) Elness, Pam (Bob) Neuenfeldt, Therese (Joe) Frederick and Mark; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many loving family and friends. Her faith, family and friends were her top priority.

Retired from Lunds after 28 years, 17 years volunteering at St. Joseph's Home for Children and a lifetime of service to the church.

Helen Elmira Oberlander, Age 95, of Minnetonka, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2012. She was born July 16, 1917 on a farm near Dawson, Minnesota. Preceded in death by her husband, Albin; three brothers and four sisters. Patricia A. "Pat" Horner, age 66, of Mound, passed away 2/10/2012. Preceded in death by daughter, Tammy and parents. Survived by her loving husband, Donald E. Kathryn L. "Kay"Marshall,  age 91, passed away on Feb. 11, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; brother, Robert Olin, and sister, Dorothy Holloway. Nenita M. "Nita" Pilapil, Age 86, of Chanhassen, passed away January 31, 2012. A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, born in Aklan, Philippines and came to the US as a student in 1956; receiving two masters degrees at the Univ. of Minn. in Education & Home Economics. She went on to teach dance, home economics, and physical education. Nita taught at Tondo High School in the Philippines and locally at St. Margaret's Academy, the Academy of Holy Angels & the Univ. of Minn.

Nita was known as an avid cook who loved to feed everyone, always looking for an opportunity to serve lots of food, and she always made sure guests went home with plenty of food. Nita loved to dance and taught many forms of dance; especially loving the Filipino folk dances. Nita was very fond of sports, everything from basketball to baseball to football, always cheering her alma mater the U of M Gophers the most. As a founding member, Nita was an active participant and contributor in the Filipino Catholic Community (FCC) of the Twin Cities. Nita was most proud of her grandchildren and relished in all of their accomplishments.

Survived by husband Dr. Bonifacio Pilapil; daughter Lenni (Martin); grandchildren Marisa, Paul, Matthew, Klara, Nicholas; and sister Rosario Albornoz.

James H., "Jim" Chalmers, age 82 of Minnetonka, formerly of Martinsville, VA, passed away January 30, 2012. Preceded in death by first wife, Joyce Pavlo, second wife, Karen Bergstrom, children, Kristina and Scott Chalmers, son-in-law, Peter Spranger and best friend and long time companion, Marlene Lester.

Survived by daughters, Lori (Sam) Hurt, Cindy (Mike) Thomes and Julia Spranger, grandchildren, Margaret Stewart Hurt, Anne Carlyle Hurt, Jennifer (Chris Vaksdal) Thomes, Leah Spranger, Joseph and Matthew Chalmers, great grandson, Jace Chalmers, daughter-in-law, Julie Chalmers, Angie Chalmers and other loving family and friends. Jim will always be remembered for his kindness, loyalty and wonderful sense of humor. 1947 graduate of Washburn High School where he participated in baseball, basketball, hockey, wrestling and golden gloves. His sports passion continued into his adult life where he coached many softball and hockey teams.

In addition to cheering for all of his favorite MN sports teams, Jim enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, golfing and animals. Jim was a member of the Chatmoss Country Club, Piedmont Arts Association, First Presbyterian Church and the SPCA in Martinsville, VA. Jim also served on the Board of Directors of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufactures Association, former president of Medallion Kitchens, Waconia, MN, and owner/founder of Air Seal Window Company and served in the Army as a draftsman.

Frances Cecelia Kokesh, age 104, of Minnetonka. Preceded in death by husband, Louis; and 2 daughters, Celia Ann and Dona Freiderichs. Mary Joan (nee Kalgren) Johnson, age 54 of Shakopee, passed away January 18th, 2012. Mary worked at Douglas Corp. for 12 years. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Mary was a passionate cook and hostess. She loved camping, reading and being with her family. Above everything, she loved being with her grand kids. Preceded in death by her mother, Joan.

Ronald R. Schulz,  age 74 passed away January 19th, 2012 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  Despite his illness, he lived independently up until his last few days and then passed quickly and peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. All who knew him will miss him greatly.

Alan R. "Al" Brown, age 72, of Chanhassen, passed away 1/18/2012. Preceded in death by his parents, sister and former wife, Nora Brown.

Survived by wife, Julie A. Brown; children, Samantha, Steve (Tracy), Deborah (Rick) Davis, Tom and Rob (Ranelle); grandchildren, Danielle, Grace, Addison, Brody and Gibson and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Al was a loving husband and father and will be dearly missed.

Robert F. Johnson, age 89 of Spring Park passed away 1-20-2012.  Born Sept. 15, 1922 to parents Laura and August Johnson in Bagley MN.  Graduated from Bagley High School in 1942.  Served in the US Naval Construction Battalion (Seebees) where he was stationed on the Island of New Guinea for 19 months.  After receiving a honorable discharge from the Navy, Robert continued his education and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Bemidji State University and a Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley. 

On July 22, 1946 Robert married Jacquoline Fullmer of Solway MN in the Solway Log Chapel.  Robert and Jaccie moved to Crystal MN where they lived many years and raised 3 children.  In 1951 Robert became a member of the UA Local 539 and worked as a Pipefitter.  Robert taught in the Apprenticeship program at Dunwoody Institute.  While a member of UA Local 539 he held many elected offices until his retirement.  During the last years of life Robert lived with Jaccie at Presbyterian Homes on Lake Minnetonka.  Preceded in death by loving wife Jaccie.  He is survived by his son, Robert L. (Barbara) Johnson, daughters, Rebecca (Mike) McCarville, Robin (Tony) Niznik, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Roderick J. Jr. (Rod or Rock) Macpherson,  age 85 died on January 14, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; and his children and grandchildren, Rick (Susie) Jamie and Ian; Mark, Mena, Matt (Vera) and Faith Casey (Ann); Margaret; Darell (Stella) Derek and Dylan; Lisa and Cheryl. He is also survived by his brother and sister, Monroe Macpherson (Kay) and Mary Jennings, and by his sister-in-law, Joan Towne. A world traveler, Rock was enormously generous of heart, adventurous of spirit, loving of soul and more than a bit of a wicked wit.

Born on 3/7/1926, Rod was raised in Chicago, Illinois and was an alumni of the University of Chicago. He moved to Excelsior in 1952, where he lived for the rest of his life. Served in the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea, retiring from the Army as a Lt. Colonel. Co-founded Macpherson- Towne Co., a masonry restoration firm recognized for its historic building preservation work. Served on the Excelsior Park Board and the Excelsior City Council for many years. Created the Carole E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Minnesota, administered by the Minnesota Women's Center, which for more than 30 years has provided scholarships for hundreds of women to complete their education. Ruth Marie Schmidt, age 91, of Minnetonka. Preceded in death by husband, Walther Schmidt. Survived by children, Judy (Mark) Lips and Gary (Kathryn) Schmidt; grand- children, Michelle, Meredith, Greg, Peter and Karly; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Donovan and Sam; 3 nephews.

Roy L. Bromley,  age 63, of Tonka Bay, MN. Died Jan. 6, 2012, born on Oct. 27, 1948 in Minneapolis to Robert and Evelyn (Dyer) Bromley. A Marine Veteran of Viet Nam. Preceded in death by his parents and son, Christopher Charles Bromley. Dorothy Upgren, Age 87, of Tonka Bay, passed away January 6, 2012. Dorothy was born and raised in Waconia, MN. Following high school, Dorothy trained to be a Morse code radio operator. During WWII and prior to marriage, she was employed in this field by Mid Continental Airlines.

In 1948 she married the love of her life, Richard, and moved into the house he built for her in Tonka Bay, where they lived together for 63 years. During this time she made this special house a home for her family. Through the years she excelled at many activities that included bowling, embroidery and golf. Dorothy loved the simple things in life as long as they included her family. Whether it was going up north to the cabin, to the North Shore, or sitting at home on the deck - family was always there with her. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a great sense of humor and will be missed by so many. She taught us all that simple things in life were the most important. She will be forever loved and treasured. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Richard; and will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Mary (Allan); sons, Stephen (Kathleen), and David (Elizabeth); 9 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren.
