Florence E. Dvorak, of Eden Prairie, formerly of Edina, passed away on December 10, 2009 at Fairview- Southdale Hospital from cardiac complications. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Bernie. Karen Jean (Hagen) Newcomb, 67, peacefully passed away in her daughter's arms at 3:00 a.m. on November 24, 2009 at her home in Shakopee, MN following a 10 month battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held December 1, 2009 at 6:00 pm, Huber Funeral Home Chapel, 520 - 2nd Street, Excelsior, Minnesota with a Gathering of Family & Friends 1 hour prior to service. Pastor Mike Golay will officiate. Interment will be private. Karen was born January 29, 1942, in Greenbush, Minnesota, to Fred and Ester Hagen and was the youngest of 12 children.
Karen absolutely loved her family and friends and cherished every moment with them. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, movies, and playing cards. She was an active member at Friendship Church in Shakopee, Minnesota, and enjoyed volunteering her time to help cook after services on Sunday. She was also a very proud and active member of AA for 16 years and of the Lady's Auxiliary. Karen is survived by her son, Mickey Newcomb, her daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and Jeff Powers, and four granddaughters, Amber, Alexie, AvaMarie and Kendyl-Perri. WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 15, 2009:  James Holland, age 45, and his son, Jude Patrick Holland, age 4, died on November 8, 2009, due to injuries suffered in a car accident. Jim was born on May 13, 1964, to John and Florence (Virant) Holland in Aurora, MN. He graduated from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School in 1982, and went on to graduate from Mankato State University with a degree in finance. Jim was employed as a National Sales Manager with Acer Electronics. He was a sports enthusiast, and especially loved to golf, but his true pride and joy was his family. Jim never missed an opportunity to express his love for them, or to show his friends how much they meant to him.
Jim and Christine Olson were united in marriage on September 14, 2002, and they made their home in Chanhassen, MN. They were blessed with the precious gift of their son, Jude Patrick, on August 23, 2005. Jude attended the Little Saints preschool in Chanhassen. He loved to spend time with his friends and cousins. Jude touched many lives in his short time here, and he brought joy to everyone who knew him.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Holland, a sister, Linda (Jim) Holland-Broberg, and a brother, Charles Holland. He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; his father, John L. Holland, Carroll, IA; and his brothers, John D. Holland, Dundas, MN and Patrick (Laurel) Holland, Savage, MN.

 Dolores H. Schroeder, Age 87, of Deerfield Beach, FL and Eden Prairie, MN. Dolores entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 22, 2009, after a valiant struggle with multiple health issues. She passed away surrounded by her family and is now resting peacefully in His arms. Born on May 8, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, she loved the Windy City and all of its beauty and attractions.
Dolores is survived by Robert, her best friend and beloved husband of 62 years; children, Mary Lou, Lori, Scott and their life companions; grandchildren, Lisa, Emily, Jeff, Marla, and Christina; siblings, Andrew Holsman, Virginia Beach, VA, and Lucille Balasa, Chicago, IL; nephew, Don Balasa, and niece, Margaret Ann MacMartin and their families. She was preceded in death by parents, Margaret and Gustav Holsman and nephew, Richard Balasa. Dolores lived her life as a talented homemaker and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
The love of the Lord that she shared with her family was a daily source of comfort and inspiration. She enjoyed Bible Study, spending time with her family, cooking, music, and Saturday evenings at St. Henry's Church dancing the night away with her Bob. She enjoyed volunteering with the Boca Raton Pops Orchestra, the Debbie Rand Auxiliary of the Boca Raton Community Hospital, and at Resurrection Life Church. Her style and elegance in her homes and attire were an outward expression of her spirit and inner beauty. Dolores loved the beauty of nature and took great delight with the dogs that accompanied her in her life's journey. Great thanks to the caring hospital and hospice staff at Methodist Hospital and to Pastors Bill and Sharon Predovich at Resurrection Life Church in Eden Prairie.
Her children and husband would especially like to thank Mom's special friend and guardian angel, Aimee, for her tireless commitment to Mom's physical and spiritual well-being. The family extends its deepest and heartfelt gratitude to Mary Lou's husband, Dr. Robert W. Johnson, who provided exceptional support, care, understanding, and love. Sincere thanks to Jane Reynolds who provided unconditional love and good will. Despite many medical challenges, her love of family and indomitable spirit enabled her family to enjoy the many blessings she was able to share. She will be remembered for her love of humor, family, and delicious home- cooked meals. She will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of those she touched.

Dennis George Poikonen, of Mound, better known as Dennie, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who always put his family first, passed away Friday October 16, 2009 at the age of 70. Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, George and Bernice Poikonen. Lisa Ann (Pfeffer) Roden, Age 50 of Excelsior, born on September 18, 1958, died in a bicycle accident on August 28, 2009. She was a speech therapist at Scenic Heights Elementary School in the Minnetonka School District. Susannah M. Anderson, Of Sunrise of Minnetonka, formerly of Becketwood and S.E. Mpls. Age 93. Preceded in death by parents Sutcliff and Hilda Horsfall and her beloved husband of 52 years, Elton E. Anderson. Susannah managed the U of M St. Paul Bookstore from 1964 until she retired in 1979. She was an advocate to all living creatures and was outspoken against all animal unkindness. Donald Wells Miller, Age 82, formerly of Longville, MN, and Excelsior, MN, died Aug- ust 20, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN, after a long & courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Preceded in death by his parents, Eugene & Evelyn, and his brother, Leonard. Survived by his six children,- Cherry (Ken) Dewees, Carrie (Jim) Heyerdahl, Susan (Dennis) Harrison, Laura (Mike Azzopardi) Hammer, Joel (Barb) Miller, Amber (Jim) Bullington; 15 grandchildren and more than a dozen great-grandchildren. Donald owned and operated Miller's Excelo Bakery in Excelsior, MN, until his retirement in 1982. His mouth-watering fresh green apple pies, kolaches, caramel apples and other baked goods were savored and adored for decades by people in the Lake Minnetonka area & beyond. Donald served in the Navy during WWII and was a member of VFW Post 772 in Longville, MN. He also was an active member and leader in Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 25 years.

John R. Liberg, age 78, of Excelsior, died peacefully on August 19, 2009 after a long battle with Crohn's disease. Kenneth Eugene Purcell, Age 80, of Indianapolis, IN and Colorado Springs, CO, passed away, July 28, 2009. Kenneth was born June 8, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Kenneth and Evelyn Purcell. Kenneth grew up in the Robbinsdale Area and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Kenneth retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant after 27 years of service and later went on to own an Airborne Express franchise from which he later retired. He was a member of The Hibernians and the Air Force Sergeants Association. Kenneth was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gloria Jean Purcell. Robert "Bob" Lower, Our beloved father, grand- father and friend, Robert "Bob" Lower passed away peacefully on July 15, 2009 at the ripe young age of 92. Born in Howard, SD on August 7, 1916 to parents, Guy and Margaret (nee Theophilus) Lower, he graduated from South Dakota State University, Brookings in 1939 with a degree in Pharmacy. He later married Marion Muriel Ritchie of Winnebago, MN on September 9, 1941, spending 59 happy years together before her death in September 2000. He is best known for co-owning Bacon Drug in Excelsior where he retired in 1989 after 50 years as a pharmacist. Legend has it that Bob was at the drug store where Mick Jaggar spoke to Jimmy Huetmacher who said to Mick, "You can't always get what you want." Hence making music history around the world. Bob took on candymaking after his wife died and he was often seen at Shorewood Senior Center passing out his fudge, an assortment of brittles and his famous pecan praline crunch. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years where he often volunteer for flag raisings and annual Turkey Trot benefit dinners at Thanksgiving. Besides the above, he will be missed by many relatives in South Dakota and Minnesota as well as the Smith Family of Dell Rapids who adopted Bob as their own, after he reconnected with college sweetheart Norma Smith. He is known to her family as "grand-beau". We thank them for all the happy times they shared with Bob. Preceded in death by his parents and brother, John. James R. Jim Ryan, 66, of Deephaven, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, after a ten- month battle with melanoma. His passing was peaceful, surrounded by the people he loved most in life, his family. Born in Hibbing August 12, 1942 to Florence "Pennies" and Russell Ryan, Jim was the second of eight children. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1960 and from the University of Notre Dame in 1965. Jim married the love of his life, Colleen, in 1972. Together they raised a family of eight children. In 1965, Jim joined his father and uncles in Ryan Construction Company, founded by his grandfather James Henry. Jim started his 44-year career in the eighth grade at the family lumberyard. He worked his way through the company ranks and became CEO of Ryan Companies US, Inc. in 1989. Jim was a humble man, strengthened by his unwavering faith in God, inspired by the goodness of others, and never lost his awe of all of life's miracles. He lived life every day guided by character, honesty, integrity and "doing the right thing." Ever thankful for the gifts he received throughout his life, Jim never stopped finding ways to give back. He was passionate about his work with the Ryan Foundation, the Minnesota Nonprofits Assistance Fund, the Minneapolis Foundation, United Way, and Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Jim loved his Alma Mater Notre Dame, and was a member of its School of Architecture Advisory Council, and a devoted supporter of the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). Jim had a passion for hunting, sailing Banshee, and skiing in the mountains of Colorado, with family, friends and colleagues. Jim and Colleen also shared their love of travel with their children. Jim was preceded in death by parents, Russell and Pennies; brothers, Michael, Tim, Tracy and Peter. Dee M. Allar, 78, beloved wife of Donald J. Allar (deceased) and cherished mother, grandmother and sister, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in her Excelsior home. She was a proud graduate of Hopkins High School (Class of 1948) and a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Minnetonka, where she was a longtime voice in the choir. She served as an active volunteer and organizer for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed golf, horseback riding and journeys to the lake cabin with family. Kenneth P. "Ken" Donovan, age 52 of Eden Prairie passed away unexpectedly on 4-17-2009. Preceded in death by his parents William and Margaret Donovan and one brother. Survived by his wife Sue Donovan, children Lizzie and KJ Donovan, two sisters, two brothers and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ken graduated from Maple Shade High School in Maple Shade, NJ in 1974. He attended Glassboro State College and earned his Masters Degree in Education from Rutgers University.
Ken met Sue in Hawaii in 1984 and were married in 1985. Ken's pride and joy was his wife and children. He spent many hours on sports fields, coaching and cheering. He found his career calling in technology recovery and business continuity. Ken was proud of his NJ roots, but we are pretty sure he secretly loved MN. We know he loved the cabin on Round Lake. Maxine Faye Zontelli Lord, Age 87 of Christmas Lake, passed away on April 11, 2009. Preceded in death by parents, Emil Zontelli, Anna Zontelli, brother, Ted and sister, Betty, baby daughter, Mary, son, James Frank Lord "Jim" and grandson, Wayne Gordon Faris, Jr. "Way." Maxine was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and served on the Alter Guild. She served on various corporate boards. Maxine lived a very active life as the wife of former Federal Judge Miles Lord, who served as Attorney General and U.S. Attorney for the State of Minnesota. Her wisdom and judgment was sought after by many prominent politicians. She was a valuable advisor to her sons and daughters. Maxine's greatest interest in life was the well-being of her family and friends. She was a wonderful mother of her 4 children, grandmother of her 5 grandchildren and aunt of her many nieces and nephews.
She loved all of her girlfriends, especially Lola Kagol and Millie Todd. She was well cared-for in her later years by dear friends and family. Despite tremendous medical and physical challenges, Maxine demonstrated tremendous bravery and strength to those who knew and loved her. The Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 10:00 am at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am. Richard Edwin "Rick" Brown, age 55, died unexpectedly of an aneurysm on April 9, 2009. Dearly loved by his wife, Rosalee; children, Stacey Rebiskie, Bridget Brown, Shannon (Travis) Pakonen, Gina Brown and only son, Ryan Anderson; parents, Richard (Dick) W. and Marion Brown; sister, Karen (John) Hughes; nieces, nephew, best friends and in-laws, Rosa and Harry, and friends too numerous to count. Rick was a 1971 graduate of Minnetonka High School. He was an executive at Motorola until he co-founded Rasco Industries with his father. He was a golfer, pilot and photographer. He also loved playing hockey, rollerblading with the dogs and riding his Harley.
His favorite activity was sharing his Bible- based hope with others. "The meek ones themselves will possess the earth and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." WEEK ENDING MARCH 30, 2009 Ronald Linn Bryson, age 64, of Eden Prairie, MN, formerly Cape Coral, FL, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2009 after a seven month battle with small-cell lung cancer. Ron was born April 9, 1944 to William and Nancy (Miles) Bryson of Pittsburg, PA. He spent the majority of his life in the optical business in Cape Coral, FL. After the death of his beloved Kate, Ron moved to Minnesota to be nearer to family and found that he embraced the northern climate's change of seasons. Ron loved his backyard, his fishing time, his beloved wiener dogs and his retirement part-time 'dream job' of driving SW Metro Transit bus.
Ron is survived by his devoted life partner, Kathie Radcliffe; daughter, Laura (Tom) Fahy and granddaughter Megan of Blaine, MN; daughter, Jenny Bryson, grandson Ayden and granddaughter Lauren of Fayetteville, GA; two sons, William Bryson, Ft. Myers, FL, Tyler (Noelle) Bryson and granddaughter Brianna of Cape Coral, FL; step-daughter, Katrina Sheldon of Eden Prairie, MN; sister, Sharon (Tom) Testa of Alexander, NC and seven nieces and nephews. WEEK ENDING MARCH 23, 2009  Charles William Jr. (Bill) Briggs. Bill was born on March 23, 1934 in St. Paul, son of Charles Briggs Sr. and Lois J. Briggs, and died on March 19, 2009. He attended primary and secondary schools and graduated from St. Paul Academy. He went on to attend Standford University and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BBA. He is survived by his wife, Judy Van Nest Briggs and two brothers, Warren of Pensacola, FL and Edward of Escondido, CA. Also surviving are five children: Charles Briggs III (Kim) of Manhattan, MT; Betsy Briggs of Big Lake, MN; Fritz Van Nest (Alma) of San Antonio, TX; Karen McKay (Mark) of Minnetonka, MN; and Barbara Zadeh (Mohsen) of Independence, MN. There are 14 grandchildren. Bill was the retired Chairman of the former Anderson Cadillac.
He spent 52 years with the company. He was very active in both business and community affairs all of his life. He served as President of the Northwestern Chi Psi Educational Foundation, Rotary Club of St. Louis Park, former Golden Valley Chamber of Commerce, District Governor of District 595 Rotary International, the former Viking Council Boy Scouts of America, Many Waters BSA, Minnesota Automobile Dealers Association and Director of National Automobile Dealers Association. In addition he served on the boards of the CM Russell Museum of Great Falls, MT, Dunwoody Institute and National Auto Dealers Charitable Foundation. He held memberships and positions in several other organizations. He was an avid railroad fan and modeler. He received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1981, the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1979 and the Silver Antelope in 1985. Memorial services to be held in late May. She was born in Seattle, WA on April 21, 1921 to Louis and Florence Freund and lived there until she moved to Mound, MN with her husband, Forest (Bud) following the war. They shared a lifetime together enjoying Lake Minnetonka. Ann was well-known in the custom drapery business during the years she worked at Nancy's Draperies on Casco Point. Later she continued this talent by personally designing and creating unique window treatments for many homes around the western suburbs and the lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; son, Tom; and sister, Alice. Terrance J. "Terry" Winzeler, of Excelsior. Our wonderful husband, father and soon to be grand- father gave up his 4 ½ year fight with cancer on his own terms on March 2, 2009. Terry was 62. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sue; daughters, Jenny, Libby (Lincoln Zahler), Katie (Nick Pahl); and mother, Isabelle. Preceded in death by his father, Lewis. Janet Marie (Illsley) Bauernfeind, Age 47 of Chanhassen passed away at her home surrounded by family after working hard at overcoming her struggle with breast cancer. Barbara Pond Allen, Born March 23, 1922 in Minneapolis, died February 14, 2009 in Spring Park. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth Martin Allen; grandchildren, Kelly Allen and Kenny Allen, and her brother, Robert Jackson Pond. She graduated from Washburn High School, the University of Minnesota and the New York School of Interior Design.
She and Ken were married June 1, 1945 and raised their six children in Cottagewood on Lake Minnetonka. They were charter members of St. Luke Presbyterian Church where Barbara sang for many years in the choir. They were active at the Juniper Hill Ski Club and Minnetonka Yacht Club. After retirement, Barb and Ken spent winters in Colorado where they enjoyed skiing, camping, jeeping and life in the mountains. Later winters were spent in Naples, Florida. Barbara was a member of the Minneapolis Women's Club and the League of of Women Voters and was a regular volunteer at the Abbott Hospital gift shop. Barbara's greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She supported them and cheered them on in sailing, skiing, hockey and all of their varied activites.

Ryan Thomas Richard, Born November 3, 1976, left us suddenly on January 4, 2009, in Van Nuys, California, where he had moved to chase his dreams. Minnetonka High School Class of 1996, where he wrestled, captained the soccer team, and was elected Homecoming King. Proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Harry S Truman 1997-2001, served in the Persian Gulf, and was appointed to the All-Navy soccer team. Award-winning independent film producer, actor and writer. Ryan's film "Ten Years After" took 1st place in the Universal Studios Film Festival, followed by the sequel, "Karaoke Dynamo". Ryan was attending The Groundlings School for professional actors in Los Angeles for improvisation, where he was accepted last year. He was also attending night classes to become a Journeyman Elevator Mechanic.
Ryan was a member of the IUEC Local 18 Los Angeles. He was employed by TRE Elevators in Hollywood. Ryan was not only about "taking karaoke to the next level." His adventurous spirit and positive attitude combined with his athlete's sense of timing to create side-splitting entertainment. His ability to appreciate and bring out the best in himself and those he cared for made him a sought-after companion. His empathy and observational skills made for comedic genius. He gave his all to everyone and everything.
